SIMSREE Foundation Day

It was another milestone for the Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE) as the institute observed its 30th Foundation Day, the venue being The Sydenham Management Excellence Centre (Auditorium).  Prof Dr. Madhuri V. Kagalkar, the principal of the mother institute i.e. Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics was the chief guest for the event.

The event was graced by the presence of Ex-Directors of the institution Prof. Dr. P.V. Dabli, Prof Dr. Lad, Prof Dr. M.A. Khan as well as the current Director, Dr. Sandhya Dhabe along with the faculty members and the staff. The atmosphere was filled with joy and exhilaration.

The celebrations began by lighting up the traditional Diya along with the prayer and followed by felicitation of the Ex-Directors by Mrs. Sandhya Dhabe. Coming back to college and seeing it achieve yet another mark in its glorious history made the Ex-Directors of the College nostalgic. They expressed their happiness and satisfaction of how well the college had performed and grown all over the years and further invigorated the students to take it to even greater heights. The new faculty members were then welcomed into the SIMSREE family. The new members introduced themselves and expressed their gratification on being part of such a glorious institution.

The mood of the auditorium was then set by the trio of the “Parindey” band with their melodious voice and the guitar adding to the rhythm. The crowd sang to the tune of the band and cheered them. The songs were followed by the cutting of the cake by the luminaries of the college to honor the special occasion. A small video was presented showcasing how the college had evolved from its humble beginning to now being one of the best B-schools in the country.

During the function, students who had won laurels in several B-school competitions across the country were felicitated. They were given accolades by the dignitaries present along with the “Token of Appreciation” for their hard work. The “Parindey” band once again brought the stage back to life with yet another thrilling performance. After it, the distribution of certificates to the members of various committees began. The members along with the coordinators who had toiled day and night to raise the standards of their committees were presented with “Certificates of Appreciation” by the dignitaries.

Finally, it was the time for Vote of Thanks given by Nishant Poojary, the General Secretary of the institute. However, this was not the end of the event. It was followed by “Minute to Win it” games which saw a huge participation. All the students present, cheered for their friends as they came on the stage to win the prize. The celebrations perfectly complimented the event which saw the institution achieve yet another landmark in its glorious history.

SIMERATIONS '13

SIMERATIONS, the flagship event of SIMSREE, was held from 20th September - 22nd September, 2013 to bring together the student community in a 3-day management-cultural-sports extravaganza. The annual fest is organized by an enthusiastic, energetic Students' Events Committee of SIMSREE. Simerations’13 gave students, all over the country, a chance to participate in an array of 20 events ranging from management to cultural to sports to literary to general. Prizes worth 4 lacs were won by the participants. The associate sponsors for the event were State Bank of India and Union Bank of India.

Simerations’13 saw a participation of over 3000 teams across the events. Most of the events were conducted in multiple stages, wherein the first round was online and the shortlisted teams were called on campus. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the Director Dr. Sandhya Dhabe, ex-director and currently the Registrar at Mumbai University Dr M. A. Khan, Prof. Ashish Pawaskar, Dr. R. K. Srivastava and Dr. Sangeeta Pandit. Dr. M. A. Khan declared the event open for students. Auspicious lighting of diyas along with prayer song, a speech by the Students Events Committee’s coordinator, Krunal Shah, followed by an energy-packed performance by Vishal Nandkumar, a student of the senior batch marked the start of the event.

The management events – Fineureka, Spotlight, Filmark, Whiplash, Convergence, Millward Brown Link Quest – gave the students a chance to present their ideas to the industry stalwarts who judged the various events. Not only did the best teams win cash prizes, few lucky teams got a chance to intern with companies like Activeark JWT and Catapooolt.

The literary events included MUN (Model United Nations) and Triathlon. Participants simulated the UN general assembly and found solutions to the most pressing global problems of today. Triathlon was a 3-stage race to the finish, a triathlon that put the participants’ left and right brain to the test. The event saw participation of 20 teams.

Cricket fanatics had a reason to cheer in this edition of Simerations’13; not only could they enjoy the game in the 'Box-Cricket Event', this time they could also experience the bidding process in the event ‘The Franchisor’. The participants enjoyed the chance to bid for the players, cities, cheer leaders, celebrities in the IPL like bidding event. Sports enthusiasts had a fun time with various other games like Chess, Table Tennis, LAN Gaming. Another event that saw huge participation was the Treasure Hunt. Participants had to do a series of tasks at certain locations to claim the treasure!

Amongst all these were the cultural events where the students who are otherwise busy with assignments and projects got a chance to let their hair down and follow their passion. Cultural events included Picture Perfect (A theme based photography competition), Guitar Warz, Salsa Workshop, Just Dance (Street Dance competition), DJ Night. Picture Perfect, with over 100 participants, brought the creativity of the participants to forefront and the judges guided the participants about the approach to be taken for future projects. The dance competition was judged by prominent personalities like Mr. Muddasar Khan (Bollywood choreographer) and Ms. Madhu Sneha (Femina Miss Fashionista 2012). Like all good things come to an end, so did Simerations’13 but it ended with a bang (DJ Night).

Runbhoomi

SIMSREE’s first-ever Inter-Collegiate Cricket Tournament – RunBhoomi was held at Oval Maidan, Churchgate. The tourney, spanning 4 days from 18th to 25th February 2013, was organised by the Student’s Events Committee of SIMSREE and it included teams from the best management & engineering colleges from Mumbai. The event was sponsored by Royal Arya Motors (Mulund) with style partner Spykar, food partner Markiv’s and merchandise partner Tucks & Bucks.

It was a ‘clash of the titans’ with teams from the top-rung Mumbai B-schools fighting the best of engineering colleges to win the coveted RunBhoomi trophy. The tournament was spread over 4 days with 3 rounds of elimination – group stage, semi-finals & the final. The matches were held at the iconic Oval Maidan at Churchgate, the centuries-old ‘home of cricket’. Each match, by itself, was a nail-biter & a display of amazing cricketing talent by all teams. The matches were played under the keen eyes of MCA certified umpires. The tournament was a perfect stage to showcase the competitive spirit as well as the teamwork required by all teams to complement their on-field skills.

The final match was played between Vidyalankar Institute of Technology (VIT) & Mumbai Educational Trust (MET) – the perfect ending of engineering versus management!! VIT won the toss & elected to bat first. They put up a daunting score of 150 in 22 overs. MET faced the target aggressively with excellent batting too but fell short of the target by 30 runs. It was a resounding victory by VIT with an all-round display of top notch batting, bowling and fielding excellence.

The elegant RunBhoomi Trophy was presented by Mr. Bharat Nadkarni – the honourable guest for the event. Currently the head of CSR division of TATA Power, Mr. Nadkarni is an avid cricket-lover having not only played on the Oval Maidan himself in his former cricketing years but also played in Ranji Trophy. He was also the chairman of Mumbai Selection Committee (1992- 2005).

RunBhoomi 2013 closed on a triumphant note not just for the winning team but also for the ecstatic organizing team – for the smooth run of the entire event!

Eagerly awaiting next year’s edition of RunBhoomi to be more action-packed, more fun but no less awesome than 2013!

First Ever "HOUSE CUP" at SIMSREE

SIMSREE hosted its first ever HOUSE CUP – an intra-collegiate multi-sport competition on 6th& 7th February 2013. The event, spread over two days, saw the students compete amongst themselves over a plethora of indoor and outdoor games – cricket, volleyball, football, throw ball, table tennis, carom, snooker and chess. The games were held in the college campus and the classes were divided into “houses”. The entire event was wonderfully planned & co-ordinated by the SIMSREE Student Events Committee. The flagship SIMSREE House Cup was won by the PGDBM class of 2012-14.

The games started bright & early on Wednesday morning (6th) with the group stage matches of table tennis & cricket happening simultaneously along with the other indoor games as well. There were multiple teams participating from each house – MMS1, MMS2, PG, Seniors (batch of 2011-13). The games saw participation from around 140 students. The students not only got a chance to loosen up and display their sporting abilities but also a platform to showcase their competitive streak, strategic & planning capabilities.

The enthusiasm of the students was boundless with back-to-back matches happening in each sport and the games continuing well into the evening. While the single-player games gave them an opportunity to compete & excel on an individual level, the team sports required the students to collaborate and compete as a group and develop their teamwork skills.

The participants had to follow strict rules per game which sometimes resulted in interesting appeals and counter-appeals. The match referees (volunteers & committee members) surely had a tough time containing the combative side of the students but they did a splendid job maintaining order & upholding the rules. Each player/team was spiritedly cheered on & encouraged & there was a general sense of camaraderie and friendship amongst the students in spite of the competitive nature of the event.

The entire event was beautifully executed and managed by the Students Events committee with immeasurable help from the infrastructure committee and the volunteers. They did a commendable job of planning the matches, maintaining the scores & order, organizing all the necessary infra and equipment required for each game.

The event ended with the handing over of the SIMSREE House Cup winner’s trophy to the PGDBM 2012-14 batch by Prof. A. Pawaskar & Prof. R.K. Shrivastava.

Republic Day Celebrations

The students of SIMSREE could feel the patriotic vibes run through their body right as the Republic day celebrations kicked in with the hoisting of the tricolor marking the 63rd anniversary of India getting its own Constitution. The rest of the day was filled with power packed action. Two heart throbbing back to back performances, a solo dance and a duet medley captured everyone’s attention to the fullest.

Following which there was a very intense and adrenaline pumping debate competition, organized by the Students Events committee. The topic for debate was “Changes in law will effectively deter exploitation  of women in India”. The debate surely raised a few eyebrows, if not many as it dwelled deeper into the shocking facts of the recent Delhi rape case, an aching wound for each and every Indian, the memories of which will always haunt the bright future of our nation. It was heartening to know that young generation sympathetically responded to the grave tragedy as they showed their deep concern by expressing their views on how to combat disrespect to Womanhood.

Judging the debate were Mr. Rohit Kumar and Ms. Aparna Dubey. Mr. Rohit Kumar, a TISS alumnus is currently leading the Service Learning Program (SLP) at the Akanksha Foundation and Ms. Aparna Dubey, our very own alumnus of ’95 batch, has worked with Reliance Group for 12 years before turning into an entrepreneur. The batch expressed their sincere condolences to the deceased rape victim by offering a minute of silence.

As the day ended with the National Anthem, all students went home with a renewed sense of belief in the system and a pledge to try and make India as was envisioned by the leaders. SIMSREE would like to thank the events committee for the wonderful experience.
